I finally have the internet permanently at home! This is great, and I am loving the internet speeds I am getting - even if I couldn't get the 100 Mbps connection. Expect slightly more frequent updates from now on.
Work is going well. Correction, classes are going well. With the new semester started, the students are much more behaved than they were previously. I implemented some new rules that are helping to keep them under control. Also, I have more time to play games with the students - and even created a game. That said, everyone at work is pretty stressed because there are fewer students than before. I think they expect student levels to stay the same, without attracting new students. Some students will inevitably leave, as they are not getting what they expected at first (English classes that are all about fun). I am trying as much as possible to make my classes enjoyable.
My one big purchase when I get paid will be a new coat that I am having made. I can pick it up on Sunday. It's very warm, and something I really need as it is just getting colder and colder. The people I work with said that they expect it to snow within two weeks. Asa!
That said, I am missing Japan. I feel like my Japanese is improving more than my Korean, due largely to Crisis Core. I can read so much faster than I could while I was in Japan. I am having all of these conflicting thoughts about wanting to go back to Japan and wanting to get my PhD in molecular biology. Meanwhile, I am in Korea doing neither of these things. I know that this is supposed to be so that I can save money and go back to school... and I have a plan on how to do it and everything... but it seems like it will take so very long. Even then, will I get to go back to Japan? Will I suddenly find myself enjoying life in the United States?
Questions... I have many. Answers? I have one. I know what I want for my birthday! Seo Tai Ji is releasing an Anniversary Album that will have 8 CDs and 2 DVDs. Every song by Seo Tai Ji, ever! It comes out on December third... so that may be my present to myself.
Why am I using ellipses once again?
NaNoWriMo is nearly upon us. I have been reading quite a bit lately, and fully plan to try to complete a novel by the end of November. It will, of course, be a rough draft. After November, I can make as many revisions as necessary.
Currently, the plan is to write about what I know. What I know, is the future. With a title like The Great Rains, you would not expect this to be a science fiction novel. It is what it is. The basic premise is a futuristic man vs nature that occurs during the creation of a Globus Cassus. It will be a story of survival.
I really need to further sketch out my characters and plot line, before I start writing on November first. I have discovered a number of useful websites for anyone considering NaNoWriMo.
I plan to draw on my experiences in Japan and Korea. I will likely use aspects of my own life as a means of really getting in touch with the characters. I know that I am no professional writer, but I would like to be able to finish writing a novel.
That said, it may take longer than November. From what I hear, publishers want books to be about double the size that is required by NaNoWriMo. NaNoWriMo requires 50,000 words - about 200 pages, double spaced. If I want to finish a novel of 100,000 words in a month - I will need to write about 15 pages per day. With work, reading, Crisis Core and the like, that does not seem feasible. I suspect I can write about three good pages in an hour. My goal will be to hit 50,000 words by the end of November, but that may be the middle of the book. By that estimate, I need to write just under seven pages per day.
Wish me luck. I may be in hiding for a month.
This week has been a big week for me as far as electronics go. I got a phone and Crisis Core and am picking up Leopard (and an external hard drive) later today. Sometime this week, I plan to sign up for 100 Mbps internet. In Japan, I had 7.5 Mbps and in the US it was 1.5 Mbps.
I was looking into what it will take to teach at universities in Japan and Korea. Nearly all of the require an MA TESOL. That is, a master's degree in teaching English. Many places wouldn't even accept one if I did it via the internet. I will still try to teach at a university that doesn't have this requirement when my contract is up, but it may be quite difficult.
I have also been looking at taking classes at a university here, so that I could take the GMAT and jump right into the PhD or PhD/MD program as soon as I get back to the States. That seems to be the best path so far.
Well, this hits home...

There are times when you just connect with a song, film, television program, or video game. Last year, Dexter was that television program. This year, it happens to be Journeyman. Aside from having an excellent cast, quotes like the one above add to the already HBO-caliber story-line.
In any case, that line got me thinking about how I am with people. I tend to find faults in people and rarely open up to anyone. I am rarely myself. In searching for love, I have the ideal in my mind - and it seems no one I have ever met comes remotely close. Even eschewing all physical attributes for purely mental ones, it becomes even more difficult. It is not difficult to find a cute girl in Korea, and even easier in Japan. It can even be done in the United States, or any nation, for that matter.
It is the mental attributes that are difficult to find in, frankly, anyone. I do not mean to imply that I am somehow smarter than everyone, but that I feel interested in far different things than most people. Where would I find a woman that is more interested in discussing books than celebrity gossip? Where would I find someone as discerning and interested in learning as myself? Are these standards too high? Because they seem to rule out nearly every person I have met. Further, such people would likely be as introverted as I (or moreso), so it would be difficult to meet them.
In high school (and afterwards), I tended to date girls that were not exactly my intellectual equals. Plenty of them were on the drugs of did not finish school, but for some reason I was comfortable around them. Now, I have no idea where I would find the kind of person for whom I am looking. Let me tell you, bars and dance clubs don't seem to be the place to meet girls interested in discussing anything of value. Everyone seems to be a member of "The Unthinking Majority." It is exceedingly depressing.
This is one of those few instances in which I know not what to do.
